Purdey Double Rifle in 450 Nitro Express, ca. 1900. 28" barrels, 13 pounds. Jones underlever, tight and much stronger than the thumb lever. Rear sight blades marked 100, 200, 300 yards. One of the most popular elephant and dangerous game cartridges. John Rigby and Company introduced this cartridge in 1898. James Purdey established the company in 1814. Queen Victoria became a customer in 1838 followed by members of the royal family. Later it became gunmaker to all the leaders in Europe. Left barrel stamped Lyon & Lyon. 16. Chowringlee Road Calcutta. Jas Lyon. Late with James Purdey & Sons. London. Locks stamped Lyon & Lyon, a managing partner with James Purdey and Sons. Bright early refinish. Excellent bores. Very good wood with no cracks. Overall in fine condition. This classic British double rifle is priced below actual value.
