Description:
Here is an interesting rifle from the 1840-50s. Excellent bore and beautiful workmanship. The wood/metal fit is top-notch. When I got the rifle I took it to my gunsmith thinking the safety notch on the hammer was broken as there is no half-cock.When I picked it up he told me that this was a target rifle as there was no provision ever for a halfcock notch. The heavy large diameter barrel would add credence to that; apparently you loaded the rifle and when you got ready to shoot you then capped it. I have not shot this rifle but I did try a patched .375 ball in the muzzle and found it a good fit. If I get time to shoot it, that is the ball size I would use. The front sight further confirms the target rifle liklihood as it just has a cup that was probably placed under the bull. The front sight sits in a dovetail so is easily changed if the new owner wants a different sight. The rear sight is the old "lollipop" variety so all the makings for an accurate shooter for target or small game are there. The only markings on the rifle are "Wm Henry Jr" on the lock. The wooden ramrod looks original. No ffl or C&R required in most jurisdictions. Shipped and insured to you door $50
