Description:
Armi Salvinelli “Sporting EXL” engraved by A.Giovinelli, 12ga – 30” Combination chokes - Near Mint

Armi Salvinelli “Sporting EXL” 12 ga.  3” chambers, Grade 5 wood, a best gun
Sporting Clays - 30" Bbls. Fixed and Briley chokes, A.Giovinelli Master Engraver.

If you have a Perazzi and want to upgrade, this is the perfect choice. This is a truly handmade Italian shotgun by a “best gun” maker. The little firm located in Val Trompe only builds a few best guns a year.

Description:
Armi Salvinelli is located at Zanardelli 210, Marcheno (Val Trompia, Brescia) Italy: Serial Number Y942, 12 GA, EXL Sporting Model over and under, finished in 2003 with 30” Vent Rib Monobloc Ejector barrels, .729” (18.5mm) bores, 3” chambers, with wide file-cut cross-hatched ventilated top rib, automatic ejectors, and single selective trigger.  The EXL is an engraving upgrade with game bird scenes and includes Grade 5 Turkish walnut and an ABS case.

Over barrel is fixed modified choke with the under barrel threaded for concealed chokes, furnished with 4 Briley thin-set chokes of Full, Improved Modified, Light Modified and Improved Cylinder, interesting choices to suit any combination of field or sporting clays needed.

Salvinelli Manufacturing Methods:
Salvinelli guns feature the optimum combination of fine artisan craftsmanship and modern CNC machining techniques. While the receiver block, the monoblock, the top lever and the fore-arm iron are milled into shape by CNC machines, thus guaranteeing a repeatable process with respect to the dimensions of parts that require precision beyond human capability, the rest of the gun is handmade: fitted, finished, checkered and engraved – all by hand.

Receiver:
The sculpted receiver of Salvinelli guns and the non-detachable trigger group allow for a sleeker receiver profile without any compromise in the strength of the receiver. The result is a gun that feels extremely solid without suffering from an overly weighty mid-section. This in turn allows for a better balance of the distribution of the weight. Insofar as competition guns go, detachable trigger groups were previously viewed as a must. This was at a time when trigger groups of competition guns were equipped with fragile flat springs. With modern coil springs, featuring greater durability and long life spans becoming increasingly the norm in competition shotguns, the risk of spring failure is no longer a consideration. Consequently, the requirement for a detachable trigger group and the resulting larger receiver dimensions necessitated by the wider trigger plate are no longer needed. This integral frame receiver is made from special Tri-Alloy Steel 40NICRMO2.

Locking System:
The locking system is a modified Boss–inspired lockup, featuring large locking lumps on the bottom of the receiver and reciprocal recesses on the barrel lump. These, combined with the large locking claws on both sides of the monoblock, allow for the overall construction to result in a very solid lockup with no transfer of shot-induced stress to the trunnions with the lowest profile possible.

Barrels:
Salvinelli barrels are cold hammer forged for maximum strength with the bores hard chromed for corrosion resistance. They are made of special Tri-Alloy Steel 40NICRMO2.

Engraving:
The underside of the receiver is engraved “Salvinelli” with a game scene of a pheasant in flight in a field. The right side is engraved with a quail in flight in a mountainous terrain with Armi Salvinelli in gold script over the chamber area.  This is complimented by the matching gold plated single selective trigger. The left side is engraved with a woodcock in flight in a marshland with trees. All three game scenes are surrounded by heavy scrolls. Scroll work continues on the top of the receiver, the top lever, the trigger guard and forearm iron; and, the right underside of the receiver next to the trigger guard is signed by the master engraver, A.Giovinelli, one of Italy’s finest engravers.

While the receiver is finished with a coin finish, the barrels, forearm iron, top lever and trigger guard are finished blue – an overall artful contrast well planned by this best maker.

The underside of the monoblock is stamped “12 / 76” (12 for gauge, 76 is for length of chamber in mm, which is the equivalent of 3 inches), several Italian proofs, and the serial number “Y942”. The top right wall of the receiver is also stamped with the serial number.

I compared the fit and finish of this gun with my Perazzi SC3 and my FAMARS Excalibur Extra and I can honestly say, this gun has tighter tolerances and is polished much finer. The blue on the barrels is incredible.

Wood:
The stock has a classic fluted comb with pistol grip.  The forearm is very well designed, not too large nor too small, perfect in shape for the overall look of the gun with this classic stock, and most importantly, fits the hand well.  It is fastened with a Deeley and Edge release and finished with the extra add-on feature of a Schnabel tip, conservatively designed. The wood is Grade 5 which comes with the EXL model. Of the different grain and color patterns of Grade 5, this is the one most desired, the dark rich walnut with subtle yet fancy grain designs of intertwining deep brown and black colors in marblecake figure.

Checkering is hand-checkered at 24 lpi and is generous with eight points wrapped around on the forend, and full coverage panels on the grip with four forward points and two nicely designed extra grip points, executed perfectly. Measurements are 14 5/8” (over a quality ½” Old English pad) x 1 3/8” x 1 7/8", Weight, 7 lbs.5 oz.

Accessories: It is cased in its factory ABS case with 3 combination locks and thermoformed velvety inlay interior with maker’s name. Also includes choke case, 4 chokes, and service wrench.

According to the Blue Book, “Armi Salvinelli is a small firm in Val Trompe Italy that builds pre-ordered guns to the customer’s specifications and only has an output of about 150 guns per year.” Check out their .

Condition: Although built in 2003, this is a virtually a NEW gun.  It retains 100% original barrel blue. The original wood finish is 99%; the checkering is at 100%; the bores are as new and the action remains as tight as new. Barrels ring with a pleasing chime.

About the Maker:
The Salvinelli name has been synonymous with fine hand-crafted shotguns for decades. In 1950, Armi Salvinelli took their family business to Italy’s traditional gun making region since the 1500s, Brescia, Val Trompia. In 1972, the company built a new and modern facility.  Today, it is headed by three of its third generation (Luca, Roberto, and Mauro Salvinelli), each upholding the strong traditions of fine craftsmanship, commitment to quality and exceptional customer care. According to Luca Salvinelli in an email to me, the original owner of #942 took possession on March 4, 2003.

In true artisan tradition, the three men work to create a gun that is built exclusively for their clients. The Salvinelli’s do not sacrifice client service and turnaround times for the sake of increasing production quantities. Their limited production allows them to concentrate on quality. Their mantra is that they would rather produce the most desirable gun in their market segment, rather than become a “household name.” Salvinelli does not advertise as much as other manufactures, which allows for a higher spend in materials, fit and finish.

As a sidenote: Medal Winner Englezoudis Petros used his Salvinelli in the ISSF 2019  Championship September 2, 2019.  While Salvinelli shotguns are not yet imported in the USA, they are expanding and looking for worldwide dealers. They recently acquired their first in Australia (Miall’s Gun Emporium).

The price is $ 8,120 for the basic Sporting L1 with no engraving. The next grade up is XL2 with light game scene engraving at $ 16,688. The third grade, the gun featured here, is the EXL version with game scene engraving and elaborate scrolls, signed by the master engraver, priced at $ 21,224.  There is a fourth custom offering, EXO, engraved to the specifications of the client with plush gold enlays and priced accordingly higher. Prices provided by Luca Salvinelli in June, 2020.

Although this gun is near new in 100% condition with all the bells and whistles of the EXL model, it is priced here to sell.
