Description:

1883 Mfg. COLT CAVALRY Model 1873 COLT Single Action ARMY Revolver SAA .45

“DFC” Inspected Revolver from the INDIAN WARS

Here we present an antique Colt Cavalry Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolver in .45, manufactured in 1883 in Hartford, Connecticut. Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt’s began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.

If you are looking for a Colt Single Action Army with its original 7 ½ inch barrel, here it is! Many went through a refurbishment process that shortened the barrel and exchanged worn out parts. These revolvers saw the climax and conclusion of the Indian Wars as well as the Spanish American & Philippine American Wars. There is a lot of history here.

This particular Colt Single Action Army Revolver is intriguing, to say the least. It features the 7-1/2 inch barrel of the cavalry model and it was inspected by David F. Clark. His initials may be observed on the bottom of the barrel and frame, as well as on the cylinder. Single letter sub-inspector marks are also found throughout. “P” proof marks on the barrel and cylinder. The left side of the frame is stamped “U.S.” The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” The left side of the frame is marked with patent dates in the years 1871, 1872 and 1875. It has blade front and frame notch rear sights, fitted with a smooth one-piece walnut grip.

Two of the things that make this revolver unique from the standard issue are the “kill notches” on the right side of the front of the trigger guard. There are three small, but evenly spaced and certainly intentional cuts that traditionally designate a kill each. The grips as well have a hand-scribed checker pattern which is more seen than felt. Each of the toes has been chipped, and the grips are worn smooth with use.

Finally, this revolver comes in a well-worn, hand-tooled, old leather holster. The gun fits nicely with the slight modification to allow the trigger guard entry. The hand-tooling is certainly fascinating in itself as it depicts the Mayan calendar. This gun started its career in the Army but it is clear, given the personalization that it left that life behind at some point and spent some time on a gunfighter’s belt. A very neat piece of history!

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and crisp and the bore is clean with good rifling. The finish has matured to a gray patina with some original blue visible. The numbers match throughout, including the grip frame, trigger guard, frame, cylinder, and barrel. A superb Colt Single Action Army that radiates a colorful past.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7-1/2 inches.
