BRITISH Antique KETLAND & COMPANY US Marked MILITIA Style FLINTLOCK Musket
With “US/SE” Marked Socket Bayonet!
Here we present an antique British Ketland & Company Militia Flintlock Fusil or Musket, made in Birmingham, England circa the late 1700s to early 1800s. Ketland & Company was one of the most prominent and active British makers of the day. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th Century.
This musket is aesthetically a smaller version of the British Brown Bess military musket. The lock plate on this musket is script marked "Ketland/& Co" ahead of the hammer. The left rear side of the barrel is stamped with two Birmingham proofs. The full length stock has brass furniture including the side plate and buttplate.
The overall condition is fair. The action functions properly but is on the weaker side. The bore is smooth and gray. There is a large crack underneath the lock and travels around to the side plate. There is some movement due to the crack. This musket comes with a bayonet that is “US” marked and does fit over the muzzle but does fit loosely. It won’t fall off, but it does move.
