Description:
Rare early Civil War desirable 1st model Maynard carbine. Single-shot, .35 caliber, 1st model Maynard carbine. Manufactured in 1858 and 1859, utilizing the Maynard tape priming system for ignition. 37” long with a black walnut shoulder stock. The wood is in very good condition overall, untouched with age handling wear. Early serial #363 stamped under the 20" barrel. includes a 5” long octagonal section at the breech. Bore is clean and bright with light rifling. Standard 3.5" folding tang sight and front blade sight. Heavy iron buttplate and iron patchbox that is stamped “MAYNARD PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / JUNE 17, 1856” in three lines. Metal has a light grey/pewter patina with mottled surface. Frame is stamped “MAYNARD ARMS CO. / WASHINGTON” in two lines on the right side. Maynard primer feed system operates perfectly. Bears a museum/collection brass tag. This low-numbered rare 1st model Maynard carbine is a fine example of a cavalry arm popular with both sides during the Civil War. Many of the early 1st model Maynard's went south at the beginning of the war.
