Description:
This is the one all the Civil War collectors want as the Single Action Starr 6-shot percussion revolver was much more reliable than the earlier double action model, which had many mechanical issues. Typical Starr Single Action features include walnut grips, 12-stop cylinder, 8" round barrel and round loading rod, "STARR.ARMS.Co.NEW.YORK" marking on the left side of the frame and "STARRS PATENT JAN.15. 1856" marking on the right side of the frame. These originally had an all-blue finish.
CONDITION: No bluing remains and all metal surfaces are gray mixed with spotty patina. Action functions flawlessly and has positive clicks on all hammer notches. Very minor cylinder wobble. All parts are original and all serial numbers match in the proper places. Bore is very good with sharp rifling and typical light black powder oxidation, no rings or bulges. Original walnut grips show much wear and dings so that only the outlines of the cartouche boxes faintly remain, but thankfully the grips are still tight and proud, never having been cleaned, sanded or refinished. Sub-inspector marks include a B and a D on the barrel, a D on the trigger guard, a C on the back strap, and a T on the upper and lower portions of the frame. Original dovetailed front sight is intact and has not been damaged or altered. Serial number 23595 falls into late 1863/early 1864 production. After the government contracts with Colt expires, the Army scrambled to get as many revolvers into the hands of its troops, so these Starr revolvers were issue to cavalry units from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Missouri in early 1864 for use in the last year of the Civil War. Grades NRA Antique Good and is a good example to add to your Civil War firearms collection.
