Infantry, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia. Headquarters. Salem. Organized May 1, 1866 ; reorganized July 14, 1876. This regiment did creditable service during the Civil War. Mustered in for war with Spain, May 11, 1898. Strength in officers and men for war with Spain, 1,327. Commanded by Col. William A. Pew, Jr., during war operations. Stationed during war: (1) State camp ground, South Framingham ; (2) Chickamauga, Ga.; (3) Lexington, Ky.; (4) Araericus, Ga.; (5) Cuba. Sent from United States for service in Cuba. Casualties during campaign : 29 deaths. As seen from the stencilled white paint this is the 8th Volunteers Militia, and Company A 10th gun issued.All the fittings and parts look correct as it came out of an attic in Western Mass. Metal color is strong blue mixed with smooth bown patina, no rust and the America walnut stock has a couple field dings , and with a complete , clear 1890 armory cartouche'. Has the 1884 ram-rod captured bayonet, and the correct 1884 rear sight. The bore on the 32" barrel has remarquably clean, shiny appearence with only slight speckling, not rust, not pits.. A very historic museum quality rifle. When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith before shooting.
