Stately Engraved 12 Gauge Double Barrel Shotgun

Here we present an antique John P. Lovell & Sons Double Barrel Side x Side Hammer Shotgun in 12 gauge, manufactured circa the 1870s in Birmingham, England. John P. Lovell Co. started his business in pre-Civil War days, circa 1840, primarily making shotguns and other sporting arms. By the time the Civil War ended, he became a retailer of sporting goods at large. By the 1890s, they had two stores in in Boston: one at 147 Washington Street and the other at 131 Broad Street. In 1900 the J.P. Lovell Company main store was sold to the Iver Johnson family and was renamed Iver Johnson Sporting Goods of Boston and continued operations into the 1950s.

This double barrel shotgun is a thing of beauty. It bears the Lovell name but was made across the pond in Birmingham, England. And a good job the maker did, too. This double features Fine Damascus twist barrels in 12 gauge. Intricate engraving is found throughout on the frame, trigger guard, locks, etc. Horn butt plate and forearm tip. The forearm is removed with the push of an engraved button rather than the more common lever of the day. A true Old World, hand-crafted beauty!

The overall condition is near fine. Good Damascene pattern on the barrels. Good case colors on the frame and lock plates. Very nice, clear engravings. The bores are mostly smooth and bright with light/minor surface pitting. Matching numbers. Strong actions. The only thing that can be improved upon is that the barrel latch spring needs a replacement. This is a looker of a shotgun!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
