Description:
SOUTH CAROLINA Antique SPRINGFIELD Trapdoor .45-70

Spanish-American War Vintage M1888 Dated 1892

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle in .45-70 GOVT, made circa 1892 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Marked for the South Carolina State Militia. The Model 1888 was the last of the trapdoor rifles that were in use since the end of the American Civil War. It also marked the end of the black powder-era, single shot, big-bore, hammer-fired rifles in U.S. service. The U.S. government would adopt the Krag-Jorgensen in .30-40 Krag, a smokeless, small-bore, bolt action repeater. However, when the U.S. went to war with Spain in the Spanish-American War in Cuba, many, if not a majority, of the state militia troops were still using the latest models of trapdoor rifle. South Carolina units did participate in the Spanish American War, such as the 1st & 2nd South Carolina Infantry as well as the South Carolina Artillery.

This rifle is equipped with a ramrod bayonet and a highly adjustable and optimistic Buffington rear sight. The breech block is marked “US MODEL 1884”, though the Model 1888 is its own distinct variant. The lock is marked with a federal eagle and “U.S. SPRINGFIELD”. It has a late serial number making it one of the latter produced. Many state militias, including this one, purchased these and used them long after they were out of use with the federal military.

This one is marked “US” and “S.C” on the top of the butt plate. The top of the wrist of the stock is marked “537”. The left stock flat is marked “56” next to the federal ordnance inspector cartouche, which bears the initials of “SWP” for S.W. Porter and a date of 1892. The right side of the butt stock is marked “23”. The underside of the stock behind the trigger guard is marked with the standard circle “P”. The left side of the barrel features US view and proof marks.

The overall condition is fine. 70% of the original finish remains, turning plum. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows expected handling and remains smooth and solid. The bore is bright and sharp. The action is excellent. Here is a fabulous example of a Spanish-American War period Springfield Trapdoor Rifle in .45-70 with all kinds of interesting markings from the South Carolina militia!
