Description:
This is an original, antique, natural colored, Indian tanned Elk Hide shirt/coat.  Beautifully sewn, with a double row of stitching throughout. Likely on a hand cranked sewing machine. This shirt was made about 1860 to 1870.  It was made of native tanned Elk hide. The stitching is in good shape for the age and not a single stitch is missing or loose. Around each button hole is the machine stitching and the stitching is very close together. The buttons are REAL BONE, three of the original 6 have been replace, but are also of bone as they should be.  Short leather fringe is on the back of the shoulders, and the top of the pockets. The two breast pockets are large and deep of the type favored by a horseman. The pocket like these allow easy access when mounted. Just the thing for a Pony Express rider. I see absolutely no significant damage of any kind. The button closer at the throat is a unique feature. This shirt/coat is a size 42 or 44 inch chest measurement and would fit the average Civil War Soldier of the time. This is of museum quality and certainly tells a story of the American West. Shirts of this style were often made by Indian women for Cavalry Officers during our westward expansion and can be seen in old photos of early cowboys . The accompanying props are not included. Rare to find as these were often used up. Great for a museum, cowboy room antique gun display. From the real west.   We always answer questions and entertain offers.
