Description:
"U.S Model 1836 Flintlock pistol with History. This pistol by R. Johnson dated 1838. Has a presentation on the stock in front of the trigger guard. It is very old thin parchment paper with a presentation as follows. Trophy from the battle of New for Sidney H. Gay from H.W.S Olscott. H.W.S Olscott was Henry Steel Olcott, a colonel in the civil war in the U.S Army. He was a journalist, lawyer and special commissioner for the war department and Navy department. The internet has many references to H.S Olcott and his accomplishments. Sidney H. Gay, born 1814-Died 1888, was an attorney and abolitionist and was part of the underground railroad with Louis Napoleon, a free black man. Together they aided approximately 3000 refugees to get to upstate New York and Canada. Internet reveals much more info on Sidney H. Gay. This pistol is dated 1838 on the lock. The reference to the battle of New York which Gen. George Washington fought the British under Gen Howe, is mostly on Long Island but the battle spilled into Harlem, with Howe being victorious. The assumption that the word “NE?" was for new but was possibly for some other battle . The pistol is very good plus with perfect cartouche. Very fine 1836 model with presentation history!.
