Description:
This is a very neat and rare Smith & Wesson Pre-War K-22 Masterpiece 2nd Model .22 caliber revolver manufactured for only 2 short short years from 1940 to 1941, just prior to the U.S. entering WW2. This double-action/single-action .22 caliber revolver was built on the square-butt target K-frame with 5 screws.  It was offered in a factory blued or nickel-plated finish and featured a 6" inch pinned barrel with no rib, a short-cocking action with an anti-backlash trigger, a 6-shot counter-bored and fluted cylinder, adjustable iron sights with a micrometer-click rear sight and silver bead front blade, and diamond Walnut grips with S&W medallions.  These pre-war 2nd Models are exceedingly rare with only 1067 manufactured total.  The serial range for this model variation is between 682404 to 696952.  This particular example is serial number 693029, making it's date of manufacture in 1941 towards the end of the short production run.  This S&W reamins in very good original condition, will all numbers-matching parts except for the grips which are un-numbered but the correct type.  This S&W has been used but has obviously been well cared-for and not abused.  The original factory blue is very attractive and bright, showing only light finish wear in spots and no eyesores or bad spots.  All of the factoryu stampings are crisp and clear, and the case-colored hammer and trigger still show some nice colors in the protected areas.  The bore in the 6" inch barrel is bright and clean, with strong and sharp rifling visible throughout.  There is no pitting, erosion, or imperfections visible.  The six cylinder bores are equally as clean and free from imperfections.  The Walnut grips on this pre-war K-22 are free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major dings/damage, and both grips match each other in every way.  Both panels have clean and crisp checkering and nice medallions.  The grips are tight to the grip frame and have no wiggle or slop in them.  The action on this Smith is a thing of beauty.  The hand-tuned action is smooth, slick, and perfectly "in time".  These pre-war guns really have to be felt to truly appreciate how expertly these pistol were put together.  All of the controls on this gun are in perfect working order, including the adjustable rear sight.  If you have been looking for a rare S&W revolver to add to your collection as a great long-term investment, this pre-War K-22 Masterpiece 2nd Model would be an excellent choice.
