Description:
This is a wartime manufactured Mauser C96 "Broomhandle" pistol in .30 Mauser. It retains about 98% of the original blue finish with nice visible "fire blue" on the trigger, sight adjuster and extractor.  The finish shows some very minor wear on the front and rear grip straps. The original Walnut grips are the proper 34 groove grips for a wartime and pre-war C96 Commercial Models and are both serial numbered to the gun. This pistol is 100% original and all-matching. The 5.5" barrel has a fixed front sight and 1000 meter adjustable tangent rear sight. The bore in this Mauser is bright with strong rifling. Standard Mauser Oberndorf markings on top of chamber and right side of frame. Crown/U proofed with Kingdom of Württemberg wartime acceptance proof on the right side of the barrel. It comes with an original wooden shoulder stock and leather harness. The stock is in excellent shape with wonderful grain and fits perfectly to the pistol without any slop. It has some cracks, which have been repaired, but also indicate this is an authentic stock as many reproductions exist. Best we can tell, the stock is numbered 786 or 788 as the markings are worn. The pistol fits snugly into the stock and has a small loop of leather which was only present on C96 pistols issued to German cavalry during WW1. This loop allowed the pistol to be carried across the chest with the stock equiped. Being an original manufactured stock allows this pistol to be fired with the stock attached as the ATF has exempted it from the NFA. The leather harness is still supple but shows its age. Its maker marked "Industriegruppe1 STUTTGART 1918" and with a faint "BAX" depot mark. Which stands for Prussian war ministry Bekleidungsamt (supply unit) for the 10th Corps. Even though this iconic pistol was never formally adopted by any military, many wartime model C96's were purchased by the German military during World War One and used for the duration of the war.  The C96 Broomhandle was praised by German and British officers alike, including Sir Winston Churchill, and have been found in various military armories from Europe to the far East. This is a fantastic piece of firearms history and would make a great addition to any collection.
