Offered for sale here is a rare, high end, custom 1874 Sharps "Boss Gun" rifle in .45-70 caliber hand built by Richard McKinney of the Schuetzen Gun Co. in Loveland Colorado. The gun has a very heavy 30 inch octagon barrel. This rifle is engraved in the style of the famous Freund Boss gun, with engraving on the lockplate, both sides of the receiver, and the forward top portion of the receiver. The rifle is fitted with a rare Distant Thunder tang sight which mimics the famous Sharps sporting sight, and a Montana Vintage Arms folding combination front sight in the style of the historic Beach sight. The rifle incorporates many of the historic "Freund Improvements" done by the famous frontier gunsmiths of the 1880's. This includes the tilting,camming breech block, dual cartridge extractors, the famous Freund reshaped hammer, and a slimmed/shaved wrist area of the buttstock/lockwork.
Richard McKinney is known for his deluxe, high end rifles, and his work is that of a master riflesmith. This includes the Freund style receiver which is machined from a solid billet block, the Beautiful case colors and the high quality polishing and blueing. The wait for a custom built rifle built by McKinney is typically two years or more. This rifle is from a collection and is new in condition and has never been fired.
