Description:
"Philadelphia Percussion Target or Hunting Rifle by John Wurfflein and Frederick Psota. This is a rare example of John Wurffleins work using a Germanic style of a Jaeger rifle as the stock is purely 1850’s style as seen on many Jaegers but not on Philadelphia made Wurfflein guns by any of the Wurfflein Brothers. John Wurfflein opened his own shop at 98 South Third St. Philadelphia after having worked for several years with brother Andrew. In 1851 John Wurfflein goes into a brief partnership with Frederick Psotta. Several patents came out of their association including a revolving rifle. Frederick Psotta left the firm and went to work for A.J. Plate in San Francisco. The barrel is marked J. Wurfflein & Psotta Philadelphia in bold gothic lettering. Barrel is 29 ½". Breech plug has gold and platinum bands. Gun is a half stock with carved forend with leaf motif. Trigger guard is wood carved in a continuation of the floral motif. The lower half of the stock is boldly carved with a stags head. Gun has double adjustable set trigger. Metal parts engraved are a 5" finial extending from the trigger guard toward the muzzle, hammer, lock and sideplate, butt plate with a 6 ½" finial extending towards the comb of the stock. Left side of stock has a shell design trap for percussion caps. Hand filed rear sight is beautifully executed (there is a provision for a rear tang sight but no sight is present). Left side of stock has a gold presentation plate and the barrel wedge has a gold plate on each side. Front sight blade is gold. Ramrod slot in forend has a gold cap. Beautiful rifle and most unusual work. The only Wurfflein like this we have seen! Also includes ‘The Wurffleins of Philadelphia: Artisans at the End of an Era" reprinted from the American Society of Arms Collectors Bulletin.
