This is a plain, but handsome rifle that retains 90-92% of the original blue finish on the barrel with scattered specks of mild freckling throughout, and some silvering along the high edges and muzzle. The frame has vibrant original color case-hardening with thin freckling as well, and is maker marked “E.F.B. LUNA" on the left side. The underlever has some light surface oxidation along the edges, but the original color case-hardening can still be seen. A very small and unobtrusive import mark is present on the underside of the barrel just ahead of the forend tip. The forend is wedge-fastened, and has large checkered panels on both sides with scattered minor handling marks and light blemishes. The buttstock is of typical design with rounded cheek-piece, and long, hooked buttplate. The rifle is equipped with a non-original Parker-Hale target front sight, however the original color case-hardened rear aperture sight is still included. This exact rifle is pictured on page 327 of “Alte Scheibenwaffen / Old German Target Arms" Vol. 2, compiled by Tom Rowe; 1999 (although there is a typo that lists the serial number as “1884" instead of “1284". According to Jesse Thompson (who wrote the Small Caliber Rifle section of the book), this is the only example of a Buchel “Luna" target rifle he had seen up to that point, even though these rifles were advertised in the GECO catalogs of the 1920s. This is a wonderful, published German target rifle, chambered in an unusual, but commonplace cartridge, and would make a wonderful addition to any collection.
