Description:

This is  a nice collectible Winchester Model 1876 Saddle Ring carbine was manufactured in 1885. This carbine has the  Third Model receiver with the integrally  macined dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. It has a 22" round barrel with a good bore, showing pitting.  The carbine has the distinctive full-length walnut forearm and long fore end tip. The barrel has a steel block front sight and folding leaf rear sight graduated to "20" and un-marked on the top of the leaf. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The fore end tip, barrel, barrel band, receiver, and dust cover have a mottled smooth  grey finish, as does  the loading gate . The hammer, lever, trigger show some traces of  color casehardening. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with an oil finish that is solid and does show a few handling marks and a chip out of butt stock by the right side reciever tang.  The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER's-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines between the barrel band and the rear sight. "MODEL. 1876." is roll-stamped in fancy letters on the upper receiver tang. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the rear tang screw. There are the  caliber, .40-60 , markings are on the breach of the  barrel and the cartridge elevator. The book "Winchester Lever Action Reapeating Firearms" Volume 1, by Arthur Pirkle, page 122, it states that only on special order, a crescent rifle buttplate with the brass trap door installed on the M1876 carbine.  However the Archive letter does not reference this..
I would say this Carbine is in Very Good Condition, but retains very little of it's original blued finish. It has a Rifle Style  Butt stock with a Crescent butt plate. The Winchester markings on the barrel and upper tang are clear.  The stock and forearm are both in very good condition and retain most of the original finish. Wear is limited to a few scattered and minor storage and handling marks. Model 1876 carbines are scarce. This is a Very Good  example of a Winchester Third Model 1876 Saddle Ring Carbine. Comes with Archive letter. Buyer  pays $45.00 shipping to lower 48 states.  I accept USPS Money Orders or Bank Cashier's Check. Will accept Personal Check, with shipping hold.  3% Credit Card Fee. Three day, non-firing, non-disassembly, inspection period. If returned, for any reason, full refund, less shipping.  Layaway Available! One third down, balance on or before end of 90 days. Other reasonable layaway options considered.  ANTIQUE!
