Mention the name Sterling Davenport in a serious group of big-game hunters and all will snap to attention. From svelte plains game rifles to the heaviest of dangerous game rifles, Sterling Davenport has outfitted rifleman with knowledge and taste since the mid-1970’s. Google his name and you will have pages of write-ups regarding his work in the finest shooting journals in the country. This full custom rifle in .300 REMINGTON ULTRA MAG (RUM) produced by Sterling Davenport of Tuscon, AZ is built on a modern, LEFT-HANDED Winchester Model 70 Magnum action with controlled round feed and has seen little use since built. The .300 RUM pushes a 180-grain bullet at 3200fps that allows a dead-on hold out to 300 yards! With a 250 yard zero there is only a 3” drop at 300 yards. The 26" KREIGER custom barrel has single-point cut-rifling with recoil lug, a perfect bore from throat to muzzle, and was produced sans sights for scope use. The rifle is capable of sub MOA groups if you do your job well. The Ted Blackburn bottom metal with straddle floorplate and trigger bow release is custom fitted to perfection. The trigger is absolutely the finest I have ever felt, breaking like a glass rod cleanly at 3lbs. pull every time. The jeweled bolt is polished and “Sterling Davenport” smooth in operation. The rifle is stocked in dense English Walnut, beautifully figured and laid out as a heavy magnum should be, with darkly contrasting mineral streaks, shadow line cheekpiece, a skeleton grip cap, two screw inlayed front and rear sling stud, ebony forend tip, crossbolt with ebony caps, and a 14" LOP to a Decelerator pad. The custom checkering pattern is borderless, multi-pointed patter with a full wrap around the wrist of the grip…a very special checkering pattern. The barrel, action, bolt, and bottom metal are all high polish blued steel and simply gorgeous! The rifle weighs 8 3/4lbs. without the scope. Sterling Davenport is a hunter. He knows both design and function very well. This gun is built the way a hot .30 caliber magnum should be. The price shown is without the scope and mounts. If you want the Leupold Vari-X lll 4.5-14 x 50 Long Range scope with Long Range Duplex reticle, rings, and mounts as part of the package add $400, which is a bargain for this lifetime warranted premium offering from Leupold. Sterling Davenport has retired and will be building no more custom rifles, making the guns he built to date all the more desirable and coveted.
