Description:
Serial #565, .320 RF, 21 1/8" octagon barrel with a good bore that has areas of dark pitting along its length. This is a handsome little tip-up rifle that has an overall mottled gray and plum-brown patina with some mild freckling along the sides of the engraved frame, and the barrel facets. The front sight bead is still in place, however the rear dovetail is vacant, and the hammer screw is missing, but the action remains fully functional. The lock-up is still tight, and the manual extractor functions well, without any looseness or play. The walnut buttstock is in very good shape, having numerous scattered handling marks and minor blemishes, while the checkered wrist has moderate flattening of the points. This rifle is pictured on pages 184 and 185 of “Tranter Cartridge Firearms" by Black, Guerin & Michaud (2007) and is listed as having been retailed by G.W. Webb of Oxford, although no retailer’s marking is now visible on the gun. The entry also states that this is the earliest know example of a Tranter Manual Extractor Rook Rifle known. This is a fascinating, published Tranter rifle, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
