Description:
Winchester Model of 1873 Sporting Rifle .44-40. The serial number of this example is 278XX placing date of manufacture in 1878-79. This is a late First Model with all the early features, 24 inch Factory Barrel and Single Set Trigger. The early style pinned Trigger, exposed Hammer screw and Lever Latch are all present on this rifle. The Hammer checking, low extractor and Tang Sight are features of most guns in this serial number range. This example is very rare. It was Special Ordered without provisions for a Dust Cover. I can see traces of silver on the Receiver indicating it was Ordered Case Hardened and the "Case Colors" have silvered out. The bore on this mostly patina Barrel is shiny with strong rifling. The bore will rate an 8 on a 1 to 10 scale. The rear sight dovetail has a factory filler and was probably shipped with its Tang Sight. The action is tight and mechanically perfect.
