Payment Types Accepted: Description: Rare early, American made, San Francisco made silver mounted dirk knife, locally used walrus Ivory handle. This rare knife comes with provenance that states it belonged to a gold seeker who went west to find gold during the gold rush. Knife is 10" long. Original silver sheath with very old, period leather oversheath. No makers mark but does have a small "S.F. CAL." stamped on the silver band around the tang. The stamp is very small. It had to be photographed using a macro lense. Letters are not much larger than 1/32 of an inch. Probably a jewelers stamp. This great stamp and provenance renders the knife an inescapable part of the California gold rush. Very early for a S.F. knife. Possibly the earliest one known. Condition is very good. Hairline stress cracks to ivory. Flush mounted locking nut on end has rust. Sheath is solid. Thick heavy leather, handtooled and handstitched, shows nice wear from being carried. Provenance names R.D. Baugh as the gold seeker from Tenn. He later became mayor of Memphis from 1857-1861 then fought in the Civil War under Nathan Bedford Forrest. SOLD |
