Description:

Bavarian Model 1867 infantry rifle-musket Podewils conversion. 32” Round rifling barrel with fine bore. This interesting rifle-musket is a bolt action arsenal alteration of a Bavarian Model 1858 rifle-musket. It is chambered for a 13.9mm combustible cartridge which is ignited by a percussion cap. Metal is overall excellent with its original smooth bright finish. Lock plate and hammer retain much of their case colors and is marked “Amberg 1868” in an arc over a crown. There is a small circle “m” inspector stamp on the front of the lock. Barrel and receiver have matching serial numbers. Receiver has three Bavarian inspection stamps on left-side. Stock is fine with the usual storage and dents to be expected of a gun this age. There are no cracks or chips. Stock, opposite the lock, is stamped “CF” and a crown over crossed swords is stamped to the right of the “CF”. An “S” is stamped to the rear of the trigger guard tang. The action functions correctly. Podewils Rifle-Musket production was very limited. They were replaced in 1869 by the Werder rifle. This is an excellent example of an early bolt action rifle-musket that is rarely seen on the collector’s market. The best reference on the Podewils is “military bolt action rifle 1841-1918” by Donald B. Webster.
