Flintlock to Percussion Conversion
Here we present an antique Single Shot Belt Pistol, made circa the late-18th Century in western Europe. This is a full-sized sidearm that would have been purchased by an officer to take to front or perhaps by a merchant for protection. This pistol features a large .71 caliber bore that would have been worn on the belt or holstered as it was carried into battle.
This pistol features a 9-inch octagonal barrel equipped with a large swale-type rear sight and a blade-type front. The aesthetics of this pistol are typical of French designs from this period. This one also has an older style lock that has its sear engagements with the hammer on the exterior of the lock plate. It would have originally been made as a flintlock and would have been updated to percussion circa the 1840s. This is a neat old pistol and one can easily imagine the sight of its gaping bore would certainly be a deterrent to the enemy or would be scoundrels.
The overall condition is very good. Nice case colors remain on the lock with an even gray patina making up the balance. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. The bore is smooth and in good condition. The stock is in great shape. A very handsome pistol.
