CIVIL WAR DATED Antique AMES U.S. Model 1840 LIGHT ARTILLERY Saber Chicopee
Dated “1864” & Inspected by G.W. Schuman
Here we present an antique U.S. Model of 1840 Light Artillery Saber, made circa 1864 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Model 1840 features a beautifully curved blade with a single brass knucklebow instead of a basket hilt. The grip is wrapped in leather and braided wire. Ames address on the left side of the ricasso. The right side of the ricasso is marked “U.S./G.W.S./1864”. The inspector’s initials likely belong to Sub-Ordnance Inspector G.W. Schuman. The drag of the scabbard is marked “C.E.W.” for Charles E. Wilson. The overall length is 38 inches with the blade measuring 32-1/4 inches. This saber would have been used in the American Civil War by Union Artillery Troops.
The overall condition is very good. “US/GWS/1864” are stamped on the right ricasso. The left ricasso reads “AMES MFG Co./CHICOPEE”. The hilt is solid all around. The blade is bright. A very nice example of a Union artillery saber!
