Description:
DOCUMENTED Antique WEBLEY & Son METROPOLITAN POLICE .450 Revolver

1880s Antique British Police Marked Revolver

Here we present an antique P. Webley & Son Model Metropolitan Police Revolver in .450, made circa the 1880s in Birmingham, England. This revolver was an update to the Webley R.I.C. (Royal Irish Constabulary) which was adopted by many police forces throughout the British Commonwealth beginning in the late 1860s. Significantly, it was adopted by the London Metropolitan Police and was cleverly and successfully marketed as such.

It holds 6 rounds of .450 Boxer with a long barrel, intended to be holstered by the police. It is also equipped with a lanyard. On the left side of the frame is stamped “WEBLEY’S” over a pair of cuffed hands above the marking “M.P.” for Metropolitan Police. The police inventory stamp and number “POLICE 755” is found on the front of the frame, just under the cylinder axis pin. The top of the frame is marked “P. WEBLEY & SON/BIRMINGHAM”. Birmingham proof marks are located on the barrel as well as around the cylinder. The revolver loads via a loading gate on the right side and the ejector rod is nested in the cylinder axis pin. The cylinder is solid with no flutes. This one is unique in that the muzzle has been turned down and a front sight fitted via a sleeve. This distinct Webley is pictured in Webley Solid Frame Revolvers by Black, Davis, and Michaud.

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is in great shape remaining bright with nice rifling. The finish has matured to a gray patina. The grips are solid and in great shape. Here we have a handsome Webley with some neat history!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
