This is a Newton Arms Co Model 1916 First Model bolt action rifle made in Buffalo, NY circa 1916-1918. They only produced about 2400 of these first model rifles before finacial hardships due to the war. Charles Newton was considered the grandfather of high velocity cartridges. This rifle was originally chambered in .256 Newton but has been rechambered at some point in its life to 6.5-'06 which is actually a better caliber to own and much easier to source ammunition for. Still has the factory markings on the barrel but it has also been stamped "6.5-06" under the barrel hidden by the stock. These rifles are built very well and many of their design features were later adopted by other manufacturers such as the multiple locking lug bolt. This beauty has a 24 inch barrel with a minty bore that has sharp crisp rifling and would make an excellent shooter or collector rifle just as well. In excellent condition overall with only faint handling marks. The beautiful blued finish has been professionally refinished at some point during its life and is also missing the factory iron sights. Has a very nice custom Monte Carlo style stock. For being over 100 years old this rifle is really near mint! Has a double set trigger and jeweled extractor. Comes with a nice vintage Leupold Vari-X II 2x7 scope with a clear duplex reticle.
