Description:
Very good to excellent Antique Roper 12ga Revolving shotgun 1866-1867 production. 1866 patent date and early Amherst Mass dust cover markings. Sylvester Roper was a life long avid inventor, He is credited the inventing the steam powered motorcycle (the velocipede) A sewing machine, the adjustable shotgun choke. This revolving rifle/shotgun and a host of other items.  This example is in very good or above condition. The action and timing are fully functional ( a common problem area in these uncommon guns) There is traces of case color on the receiver. The barrel blue has faded down to a pleasing grey with touches of light brown. The barrel is 26.5" and has Ropers removable choke. The bore is shiny with some scattered light pit marks nothing deep and given these were black powder thats surprising. The wood is fine showing some light handling marks and the occasional ding but well above average for these. The s/n matches on the breech block/bolt assembly, barrel, forend and receiver (marked under the forend) One 12 ga original steel case cartridge is included. Original steel buttplate, pewter forend tip and receiver ring.  The history of Mr Roper and his relationship with Mr Spencer and his  inventions are more than I can cover here but thehas lots of good information on both the man and his guns.
