The 7-shot repeater chambered in the .56-56 Spencer metallic rimfire cartridge was one of the most important weapons of the war, as the firepower advantage it gave an individual soldier against an enemy armed with a muzzle-loading musket was immense. Issued mainly to Union cavalry troops, the Spencer 1860 Carbine became the most sought-after weapon of the Civil War. The Confederates captured a number of Spencers during the course of the war, but they were not able to use them to great effect because they could not secure enough of the metallic cartridge ammunition which was manufactured in Union territory. The Spencer carbine served throughout the Civil War and into the American Indian Wars, before finally being replaced by the Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield. Many of these Spencer carbines were sold off as surplus to civilians, where many of them had second lives protecting settlers headed out to the American West, as well as taking game to feed them. This particular Model 1860 Carbine is serial number 60320, and is in excellent refinished condition. It has a nice vintage patina, a bright clean bore and a perfectly functioning action. The furniture is beautiful with a nice grain and very few dents and dings considering its +150 year age. This would make a nice addition to a Civil War collection anyone can be proud of.
