Description:
BRITISH Antique WEBLEY Patent POCKET Revolver with FOLDING TRIGGER Rare

EARLY Double Action Percussion Webley 1860s!

Here we present an antique Webley-Bentley Double Action Percussion Revolver, made circa 1861 in Birmingham, England. This revolver design was the result of the work of Phillip Webley and John Bentley, who each held their own patents. These revolvers were then produced by several different makers in Birmingham, England, with several design variations. Some featured top-straps over the cylinder, some did not have the flared tang on the back of the grip, etc. Unwin & Rodgers, Birmingham gun makers famous for their combination knife pistols, is known to have made these pistols. This is one of those revolvers that laid the groundwork for what the company would become known for, namely their Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) and Bulldog and service revolvers.

Aside from “Webley’s Patent” this specimen is one of those that was left unmarked aside from the British proof marks on the barrel and cylinder chambers. It is a double action only revolver with a folding trigger and a spur-less hammer. Both these features aided in concealment. However, there is what appears to be a flip up tab that would hold the hammer out of battery and allow the cylinder to revolve freely for loading. The barrel is fully octagonal and .35 caliber. It holds five shots and has a side mounted loading lever that snaps securely onto the barrel. The grip shape is very distinctive of other English revolvers of the time. Competitors like Adams, Tranter and Kerr also had very similar designs.

The overall condition is fair. Gray patina. The action (hammer/trigger) are functional, however, the cylinder revolution is intermittent. The bore is in good condition with nice rifling. Light engravings are present on the frame. Here is a rare example of a British Webley patent revolver with a unique feature set!
