Description:
Civil War WHITNEY ARMS P1853 ENFIELD Rifle-Musket

1 of 3500 Whitney Enfields Used by the NORTH and SOUTH

Here we present an antique Whitney Enfield Pattern 1853 Three Band Rifle-Musket, made circa 1859-62 in New Haven, Connecticut. The P53 was the British Military Ordnance Board’s choice for adoption as the primary long arm in 1853. It was considered the apex European military gun of that time, introduced by the British War Department after several studies to improve the calibers and the dimensions of the previous models. However, it kept the same general appearance of the earlier pattern 1851. The overwhelming majority of P53 Enfield Rifles were made by commercial gun makers in Birmingham and London under contract. This gun features a ladder rear sight with a slider assembled on a base with steps and steel barrel bands. The ramrod tip is shaped with the characteristic jag slot. It is also equipped with two sling swivels. Whitney only manufactured around 3,500 of these rifle-muskets as “Good & Serviceable Arms”—sort of a line unto itself in which Whitney bought surplus parts off the market and completed the muskets in-house—with many ending up in Confederate hands as they were sold to various states before the war began.

The only marking is on the lock: “E. WHITNEY”. There are no inspector markings as these were sold directly to states for their militias and “not to be subject to government inspection with gauges.” What a great and rare piece!

The overall condition is Fine. The action is strong. The bore is shiny and bright with nice rifling. The steel is bright white. A scarce piece of civil war history with some shimmer to help draw eyes towards any collection!
