Description:
Leather bags, like this one, were used by young boys called "Powder Monkeys" because they ran bags of gunpowder from the stores below deck to the gun crews. These boys, as young as 10 years old, were selected because of their speed and height. Being short they could be hidden behind the ship's gunwale, and less of a target for the enemy ship's sharpshooters. The lid of this bag / canister is stamped in an oval "NAVY YARD NY 1864". The side is marked in white paint "12 PDR LIGHT".
