These boys, as young as 10 years old, were selected because of their speed and height. Being short they could be hidden behind the ship's gunwale, and less of a target for the enemy ship's sharpshooters. The lid of this bag / canister is stamped in an oval "NAVY YARD NY 1864". The side is marked in white paint "12 PDR LIGHT".
