HERE’S ONE JUST FOR FUN! SPORTERIZED 1898 KRAG CARBINE, #405XXX, MADE 1902. These were popular during the Great Depression (and earlier) when money was in short supply and obsolete/surplus Krags were cheap. The .30-40 Krag caliber is a great hunting cartridge that has taken all North American game- the largest being cleanly taken with 220 grain round nose slugs at modest range. The example at some point has had the barrel cut to 21 inches, the rear sight and handguard removed and fitted with a Williams side mount for a scope- one of the three screws holding the mount went through the 4th and 5th number of the serial number- (now holds a 4 power Tasco ). Interestingly, an exact matching piece of walnut was expertly fitted to the wrist of the stock to make a pistol grip. It, along with the wrist, are coarsely checkered and it has a wood grip cap at the bottom. The blending is amazingly well done. The action is tight, bore is bright with good rifling and the optics are fine and clear. As always, if you want to shoot this one, have it checked by a gunsmith. Has the correct trap in the butt for cleaning rods. Solid stock.
