Description:
Up for consideration is a contemporary flintlock transitional longrifle. The .50 cal. 36" straight octagonal barrel is stocked in a nice piece of curly maple and is fired by a R. E. Davis early lock.
The intent was to creat a representation of German jaeger items restocked in an American curly maple stock. To accomplish this the barrel as been blued in the European custom of the times. The date of production is engraved in Latin on the top flat as is the production number. My makers mark is stamped into a brass panel on the off side oblique flat. The vent hole is bushed with a "White Lightning" liner for quick ignition. There is also light decorative engraving at the breech and muzzle of the barrel. The muzzle has been lightly coned and also had decorative filing done to the face.
The lock has been engraved, tuned, and had all the screws hardened.
The hickory rammer has a brass cap and a threaded sleeve on the small end for cleaning tools.
The stock was blushed with Aqua Fortis and then given a honey maple stain. The finish is Permalyn oil and wax. Carving is Germanic, simple, and robust. The sliding box cover is held in place by a spring and is lightly carved.
The furniture was either modified to suit or made in my shop and engraved to the style and period.
The length of pull is 13 3/8" and drop at the heel is 2 1/2". A brass vent pick sits in three staples under the cheek rest.
The rifle has been mildly aged to give the appearance of a used but well cared for piece.
This new made and unfired rifle is well suited to either the hunter and/or historical revenactor.
