Rare Late Civil War Militia Rifle!

Here we present an antique Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. Model 1865 Repeating Rifle, made circa 1865 in Boston, Massachusetts, at the tail end of the Civil War. About 1,000 made of this variant. The Spencer Repeating Rifles were marvels of the time and had a lasting impact on how war was to be fought in the future. Though their service life in the U.S. military was relatively short, the Spencer story includes Christopher Spencer, the inventor of the rifle, demonstrating and shooting with President Abraham Lincoln, who gave his full endorsement of the piece. Supposedly, during the battle at Gettysburg, a captured Rebel that day said one could “load in the morning and fire all day!” This was due to the Spencer’s most endearing quality: a 7-round magazine tube in the butt of the gun. This gave the shooter phenomenal firepower in a day when most soldiers were muzzle-loading single shots or even singly loading their breech-loading carbines. The Spencer went head to head with the Henry Rifle and though the Spencer won far more in the way of military contracts during the war, ultimately, the Henry design would achieve far greater success as it morphed into Winchester and became the iconic name it is today.

The breech end of the barrel is marked “M 1865” with the company address just behind that. The left side of the butt stock is marked “13” in block letters. This batch is thought not to have been the result of a US contract, and there are no inspector markings throughout. But it would appear that this rifle ended up with a local militia and that number 13 is very likely an inventory number.

The overall condition is near fine. 80% original finish remains. The markings are clear. The number is early and in the 2400 range. Great, solid stock. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and the action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 30 inches.

Caliber: .50 Spencer
