Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare & Desirable Charles Smith & Sons, Newark on Trent, England 8 Gauge Single Barrel Breechloading Shotgun with Jones Underlever, 8 Ga, mfg. circa 1880. This piece comes directly from my long time personal collection of choice big bore shotguns and was purchased years ago from an old hunter in Maryland where it had seen decades of use for commercial hunting. Large bore shotguns and punt guns were the weapons of choice for commercial hunters who made their living harvesting as much waterfowl as possible on a daily basis to supply local markets and hotels. Maryland's Chesapeake Bay was arguably the focal point of this trade during the 19th and early 20th century. Overall the shotgun remains in very nice untouched original condition just as it left the hunter's hands. The Damascus barrel measures 36" long and features a brass bead front sight. It is Birmingham proofed and numbered "17468" with "CHARLES SMITH & SONS NEWARK ON TRENT" inscribed on the top flat. The lock is also inscribed "CHARLES SMITH & SONS" with light boarder engraving throughout. The case hardened frame has faded to a silver/gray patina while the barrel retains 80% rich browned Damascus pattern. The stock is well figured and features a checkered wrist and forearm. It retains a very attractive untouched finish throughout showing honest wear and use. There is an old chip missing from the left rear corner for the forearm and a stable 2" crack opposite on the right side but otherwise the wood remains sound with no further damage or repairs. Original horn forend cap with period working replacement horn buttplate. Original hammer, trigger, Jones underlever, and Nickel Silver nameplate escutcheon. The hammer screw is an old replacement. The action features a rebounding safety and is crisp and functions perfectly. The hammer is just a little loose on the tumbler. Original firing pin and extractor. The barrel locks up tight against the frame with no play whatsoever and the underlever snaps into place beneath the triggerguard. The bore is smooth and clean for the most part with only very minimal blackpowder frosting however there appears to be a circle of corrosion directly in the middle of the barrel. There are no signs of bulging on the outside of the barrel and my belief is that whoever cleaned the gun last (many years ago) used a rod half the barrel's length which left an untouched ring of blackpowder remaining in the middle. I think with some aggressive cleaning it would go away. Otherwise the bore is quite nice. The gun weighs a hefty yet manageable 10 lbs 14 oz. A very nice and honest example of a fine English 8 Gauge that saw countless years of service along the Eastern shore. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique firearms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only. For the purpose of these conditions the term "antique firearm" will hence include muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions.
