British Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle with Possible Confederate Connections. Original .577 caliber 59” round barrel is now approximately .59 caliber smoothbore with a fair bore. Barrel has a smooth bright finish overall with pits polished out in the breech area. Barrel has the usual Birmingham proofs with the two “25” which denote .577 caliber. The lock has a crown to the rear and 1861 / Tower to the front. The hammer has light pitting on the off-side and the lock and bands are smooth. Stock is very good with no chips or cracks. It is maked ”W.L. Sargent between the toe and trigger guard tang . The trigger guards tamped “CSA”, the authenticity of which we cannot verify. Action functions correctly. Pritchard and Huey, in “The English Connection” states that William Lucas Sargeant, 74 Edmund St., Birmingham, was one of the larger and more important Birmingham Arms manufacturers (pg. 73) They also included W. L. Sargent on their list of known manufactures with reliable Confederate Association (pg. 100). This Enfield undoubtedly saw service during the Civil War and mostly likely with Confederate forces.
