If you are looking for an honest representation of the Civil War and the mid-1800's old west, this revolver would be a great addition to your collection! Designated the Whitney Pocket Model Revolver, this type revolver is a 31 caliber sidearm of which a total of 32,500 such handguns were produced at the Whitneyville Armory manufacturing center in the Whitneyville section of New Haven, Connecticut from 1859 through the early 1860s. In good condition, this Second Model, 2nd Type Whitney sidearm is a three-screw model frame with a 5-shot unrebated cylinder mated to a 5” long, octagonal barrel and ball type latch on the loading lever. To me the 5 inch barrel revolver seems to be harder to find; most of them seem to be 4 inch. Gunmetal retains no case colors or bluing. Cylinder retains faint portions of the original roll engraved scene. Revolver bears the serial number “1764” stamped on the frame under the trigger guard. The serial number on the loading lever is not readable but appears to end with 7. There is no number on the underside of the barrel. The two-piece plain grips are of varnished walnut and are in good condition with wear along the bottom edge a couple of well-done chip repairs and the letter "W" carved on the right grip and on the bottom of the grips/backstrap. Barrel top flat shows a strong “E. WHITNEY / N. HAVEN”. Bore is very nice with strong rifling. Sidearm has an iron frame and backstrap which show moderate wear. Brass trigger guard has a beautiful uncleaned patina. Mechanics are great, it indexes well and locks-up tight. Original nipples are in excellent condition with clear openings. Overall the revolver wears a light gray coloring with scattered areas of mottling, some pitting on the loading bar, and moderate wear. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: E.
