Description:
BATTLE CREEK MICHIGAN “S. ADAMS” Swivel Breech Percussion Double Rifle

Neat Swivel Breech Rifle made in Battle Creek, Michigan!

Here we present an antique Swivel Breech Percussion Double Rifle by Adams, made in Battle Creek, Michigan circa mid-19th Century. Battle Creek was founded in 1831 and became an official township in 1839. This was a thriving stop for the Underground Railroad in the years leading up to the American Civil War as fugitive escaped slaves were smuggled across the Canadian border. This rifle was made during this period.

The advantage of having a single firearm that can fire two rounds was quite significant when most other firearms only packed one shot. Whether it be for defending the homestead, or taking a second shot at large game, those two shots could have been the difference between winning or losing. These were supremely handy firearms. Both barrels are marked “S. ADAMS/ BATTLE CREEK”. One trigger works both hammers. The button on the breech tang allows the barrels to swivel.

The overall condition is Good. The action is strong though the hammer does slip out of cock. The skirt around the hammer is a bit chipped and the hammer is a bit off center. The bores are dark with good rifling.  The patch box open and closes properly. There are a couple of hairline cracks on the finish behind the breech. A great piece of history from Battle Creek, Michigan!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 28 inches.

Caliber: .38 (.3765 from land to land)

Overall condition as seen in photos.
