Double Action No. 1 Revolver Marked R.I.C on Frame
Here we present an antique British Webley No. 1 Royal Irish Constabulary Revolver in .442 Centerfire, made in Birmingham, England circa the late 1860s. This revolver represents one of Philip Webley’s most iconic designs. It would not be until the late 1890s that P. Webley would join forces with W.C. Scott, helping to date this dazzling gem in .442.
This double action service revolver was adopted by the Royal Irish Constabulary and remained in production from 1867 and well into the 20th Century. These would be used by the British government, police, colonial authorities as well as civilians. It features a smooth double action mechanism in a relatively compact size—plenty of firepower for the day. Whether you were a fur trader dropping off the last haul for the dying industry, or simply heading home from the local general store, a self-defense weapon such as this, would have given you a bit more piece of mind.
It is said that General George Armstrong Custer was carrying a pair the day he and his 7th Cavalry were wiped out at the Battle of the Greasy Grass, perhaps better known as the Battle of the Little Bighorn. These revolvers were seen in many situations and scenarios inside of the military and out. It’s quite the sight with a nickel finish, 6 shots, British proofed barrel, frame and chambers.
The overall condition is Fine. The action is strong. The bore is bright. The grips are in good shape with just a small sliver coming off the right side. The cylinder arbor assembly has been adapted at some point. The markings are clear. A wonderful example of the No. 1 that would make a fine addition to any collection.
