Description:
Antique DEANE & SON DEANE HARDING PATENT Revolver

Marked “CS” and from the Civil War Period

Here we present an antique Deane & Son, Deane-Harding Patent Double Action Percussion Revolver in .44 caliber, made circa the late 1850s or early 1860s. George and John Deane were a father-son duo who were initially in business making the revolvers of Robert Adams, circa 1851. They would part ways in 1856, each working on their own developments in the firearms industry in London. These were very early double action revolvers that would provide the building blocks for the next generation of sidearms.
This revolver could be considered “dragoon” sized and it packs 6 shots of .44 caliber ball. The double action is very smooth and the grip very ergonomic. It incorporates British Patent No. 669 of 29 March 1858 and No. 1159 of 24 May 1858. The barrel is marked "DEANE & SON. 30 KING WILLIAM STT. LONDON BRIDGE". Patent numbers throughout. This one is also marked “CS” on the right side. There are London proof marks on the barrel and chambers. This one has a more American style loading lever, though the catch has a unique side-lever release.

These revolvers were well-received among professionals in the late 1850s to the early 1860s and were eventually popular among officers in the South during the American Civil War in the early 1860s, imported from Europe.

The overall condition is Near Fine. Much of the high luster blue finish remains. The markings are clear. The bore is dark with strong rifling. The action remains excellent. These early double action British revolvers are hard to find and come in many different variants.
