Description: Manhattan Firearms Company, made in Newark, NJ. Navy revolver, 36 caliber percussion, 5-shot cylinder with roll engraved cylinder scene and 10 cylinder stops, walnut grips, blued and case hardened finish, silver plated brass back strap and trigger guard, 6.5" octagon barrel, single action, serial number 43088, series III, made late 1863, having the single-line barrel address and "B KITTREDGE CO CINN O." marking on the left side of the barrel lug just forward of the wedge/screw. Ben Kittredge was a sales agent in Cinncinnati, OH for many firearms manufacturers of the period and distributed many firearms by private sale to Civil War combatants. Kittredge also applied for a patent and was granted such on March 8,1864, patent number 41848, to improve the revolvers with a shield or plate to throw the fire from the nipple off in a sideways direction, preventing its being thrown back into the lock and prevent them from clogging the cylinder as it revolves. CONDITION: Blued and case hardened finishes on barrel, loading rod and frame have turned a mottled patina. Original walnut grips show numerous nicks and dings, retaining 85% of their original varnish, no splits or cracks, no losses at the toes, never sanded or refinished. Cylinder retains all 5 original nipples and they are intact/undamaged. 80% cylinder scene remains and the patent date/marking on the cylinder is 100% clear. Brass trigger guard and back strap are uncleaned and have turned a pleasing dark ochre color that the collectors like to see, having just traces of the original silver plating remaining in the protected areas. Decent bore with consistent but typically fouled rifling. Barrel to frame fit has just a hint of play. Fairly strong hammer spring. Cylinder does not quite index perfectly and is very slightly out of time - not a large amount, about 1/16". Initials "AMB" are lightly inscribed in small letters on bottom of grip. Serial number matches on bottom of grip, trigger guard, frame, barrel, right side of cylinder pin, and rear of cylinder. A couple of screws have been replaced, otherwise this is completely original.
