Description:
Remington New Model Police Revolver. Produced by E. Remington & Sons, Ilion, New York, c. 1865 to 1873. This sidearm, was one of some 18,000 factory alterations from a percussion cap and ball round to a metallic rimfire .38 cal.cartridge.Designed to compete with the Colt Model 1862 Police sidearm and the Pocket Navy revolvers, this .38 caliber rimfire, five-shot, unrebated, two-piece cylinder is fitted with a special plate on the back of the cylinder. Often at the time of the conversion these guns were nickel plated like this one. Barrel has serial number #7037 on the bottom but stampingsnot present. Barrel shows very sharp, defined maker stampings of “PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858 MARCH 17, 1863 / E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK U.S.A. / NEW MODEL”. The revolver, in very good condition, has fine, two-piece original varnished walnut grips.
In amechanically strong condition, the revolver features a gray finish on the cylinder woth the remainder nickel plated with the brass trigger gused no finish and possibly cleaned and buffed recently.Cyloinder comes uo and lock center , tight as a bulls behind in winter! Works very well but the hammer must be pulled all the way back to the stop and cylinder indexes up in place, a weak half cock will get it out of time. These fine guns were work horses for early cowboy use, sheriff, and city police usage. When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith before shooting.
