Description:
A collector can spend a lifetime looking for a model he/she collects with a single digit serial number or a consecutive pair of serial numbers. Here is a pair of S&W 38 Single Action Revolvers with consecutive single digit serial numbers. They don't come much rarer than that! These are both nickel plated with 3 1/4" barrels and the early hard rubber checkered grips. These are early Topbreak S&W 38 Single Action 2nd Model was the successor to the 1st Model aka by collectors as the "Baby Russian" model due to its enlongated ejector housing under the barrel which resembled the larger .44 and .45 Caliber S&W Americans, Schofield, and the Russian Models. The 1st Model was in its own serial range, 1-25,548 and made from 1876-77. The 2nd Model had a newly patented ejector which required no housing and were produced from 1877-1891 and in its own range with serial numbers running from 1-108,255. This ejector design is the same found on the New Model Number 3 in .44 Russian and all of the .32 and .38 Double Action Revolvers which were built for decades into the 20th century.
Overall condition on these two revolvers is NRA Antique Fine+ to Excellent with both revolver retaining well over 90% of their original nickel plating. Both guns have matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, latch, and barrel...See Photos. Both cock, index, lock, and the barrels are tight to the frames. Both have Good bores with some light pits and a little frosting but solid rifling with no rings or major pits. The grips on both revolvers are the correct early style plain S&W marked grips (not the later style monogrammed grips like you see on the DA's) with no chips, cracks, or repairs. No. 7 has some light dings on the but from being used to tap something against (probably used as a hammer) and there are some more significant tap marks on the top rib of the barrel just behind the front sight which has affected some of the barrel address which is still legible (see photos). Both have decent screws and their original front sights are intact and have never been altered. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own not one, but two single digit serial numbers of one of S&W's most popular early models from the 19th century. For every model, only the first nine built have one digit serial numbers and here are two with consecutive numbers....better yet, one is even the lucky number 7!
