My interests are Winchester rifles in models 1892 and 1894 especially with shorter than standard barrels. I have also written four books on Newton rifles and have interest in all models of those rifles. newtonrifles Description: This is a First Model 1916 Newton rifle in caliber 256 Newton. It has serial number 1102 matching in 8 places. It has original sling swivels, front sight and the double set triggers work well. A recoil pad has been added. The Lyman 48 Second Variation receiver sight was probably added after the rifle left the factory although that sight was introduced in 1919 so if this rifle was sold by the Newton Rifle Corporation, they may have added the sight since they bought out the Receiver in 1919. Even though the rifle is numbered 1102, it may have been sold by one of the later companies that sold ouy the FIrst Model 1916s. These rifles were not necessarily sold in chronological order by serial number. Some were transferred for different reasons to the later companies and sold by them. The bore on this rifle is good. The receiver finish is about 85-90%, the barrel about 75% with some handling marks. The floor plate and trigger guard are about 60%. The wood has no cracks although the finish has some small blotches in some areas. The bolt has been streamlined and bent out from the receiver. This is the most common caliber for the Model 1916 with about 60% of production or about 2400 rifles produced.
