Antique BLUNT & SYMS of NEW YORK Pepperbox Pistol
Engraved, Underhammer, Ring Trigger Revolver
Here we present an antique Blunt & Syms Pepperbox Revolver, made circa the 1840s in New York, New York. Several thousand are estimated to have been made. Ethan Allen was a contemporary who was also in the business of making firearms, especially pepperboxes, but with a different design. Blunt & Syms pepperboxes feature a ring trigger and a hammer on the bottom of the firearm instead of on top, making it a bit more streamlined. The hammer also has a small shield mounted on it to protect the user’s hand from the small detonation of the percussion cap.
This one features very nice engraving on the top half of the frame and down the back strap. Unlike most Blunt & Syms pepperboxes, which had ribbed barrels, these are round, each with a tiny brass bead front sight of its own, making it very scarce. The only markings on this exterior of the pistol are on the face of the barrel cluster.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces bear a smooth patina. The markings and engravings are clear. The bores are smooth and dark. The original walnut grips are in great shape. The hammer mounted shield is a bit chipped. The action on this pepperbox is excellent. Here is a very scarce revolver with even scarcer features!
