SOVIET CAPTURED Nazi German Mauser LUGER from WWII
“S/42” Code Name; Dated “1938”
Here we present a Nazi German “1938” Dated Mauser “S/42” Code Luger Pistol, made in 1938 in Oberndorf, Germany. Basing his design off Hugo Borchardt’s seminal C93, Georg Luger successfully brought Borchardt’s work to practical fruition. While finding buyers for the C93 seemed an exercise in futility, the new Luger Pistol found many countries eager to test it and even adopt it. There are many variations in this field of collecting, but relatively few major changes in overall design from beginning to end. The Luger is certainly one of the most iconic firearms in history, made so by its association with Germany during both World Wars.
This Mauser “S/42” Code Luger Pistol is interesting, not only because of its association with the Nazis during World War II, but because it also shows the hallmarks of having been captured and used by the police in East Germany during the Cold War. This was the Soviet Union controlled portion of Germany after WWII. So, this pistol was used under two different despotic regimes. The top of the chamber is dated “1938”, making it pre-WWII. This is when the Third Reich was rearming itself and using code names like “S/42” (for Mauser) for its manufacturers to avoid detection. This pistol was captured and used by the East German Police, called the Volkspolizei. There is an “X” on the left side of the chamber, which is a typical mark. It was arsenal refurbished at some point so that the entirety of the pistol has a dark black finish, even over parts that used to be straw-colored. The grips are also typical of the East German guns, having a brindle red/brown color and bullseye target motif. The barrel was likely replaced at this point and appears to be the only part not numbered to match. Metal base of the magazine matches with the full number. The original German military acceptance markings are still visible on the right side of the chamber.
The overall condition is fine as arsenal refurbished. The blue finish is 80%. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The grips are in great shape. The bore is sharp and bright. The action is excellent. Here is a neat piece of history from both the Second World War & Cold War!
