JOHNSTOWN NEW YORK Antique AMERICAN Smoothbore Long Rifle by SAMUEL W. HILL
Early, Circa 1830s Percussion Musket!
Here we present an antique Half Stock American Smoothbore “Long Rifle”, made circa the 1830s by Samuel W. Hill in Johnstown, New York. This musket features a nearly 35-1/2 inch octagonal barrel with a bore that measures .4780 inches in diameter. It is fit with an attractive brass patchbox in the right side. Rifle type sights. This is a long, slender, well-balanced weapon that would have been essential on the Frontier for putting food on the table or defending against predators both quadrupedal or bipedal.
Samuel W. Hill and his family immigrated from England to Johnstown, NY around 1821 and set up his shop making guns and doing gunsmithing work. His shop was at 154 Main St. His son, Lemuel, would join him in his trade and eventually take over the family business when his father passed in the 1840s. Lemuel would pass in 1895.
The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the ‘Kentucky rifle’, was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:
“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.
Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”
The overall condition is Good. The action is as strong as ever. The bore is smooth and dark with age. This muzzleloader would tell stories if it could.
