The model 1803 was the only muzzle-loading rifle made by either of the national armories, with all being produced by the Harpers Ferry armory. This well-done reconversion was made in 1815 during the second production run for the War of 1812. This rifle has the standard early style 33" octagon to round barrel with the single wedding band approximately 10½" forward of the breech. The .54 caliber rifled bore is very good. All metal has a dark patina with areas of light roughness. Stock is very good with no cracks or chips. The brass furniture is very good. The action functions correctly. The lock is marked “Harpers/ Ferry/ 1815" at the tail. The center of the lock has the Eagle stamp. The U.S. within the shield is not visible. The barrel has oval sunken U.S. and eagle proof marks. The patch box operates correctly. The model 1803 is one of the finest looking U.S. rifles ever made. This one is priced reasonably at less than half of what an original unaltered rifle would bring.
