High quality american flintlock double barrel shotgun by James Haslett. Haslett operated out of Baltimore, MD, circa 1803-1827. The overall length is approximately 45½”and the approximately .770 diameter barrels are 30”. The bores are very good. The bottom of the barrels are marked “Osburn & Co.” and “narrow twist”. The metal is smooth with a brown patina. The Damascus pattern is visible on the barrels. Stock is good with an old repair at the front of the right lock and some wood loss at the barrel line. The original cleaning rod is present. Barrels have a single gold band at the muzzle (about 50% present) and two double bands at the breech (about 85% present). In addition, two gold stylized “H”’s are inlaid on the barrels (one each barrel). Within the crosspiece of the left “H” is engraved “Haslett” and the right has “Baltimore”. Each lock has an oval gold inlay with “Haslet” (misspelled by the lock maker). James Haslett (1773-1833) operated in Philadelphia from 1798 to 1803 and in Baltimore from 1803 to 1827. He is known for fine military and civilian flintlock firearms, include cased dueling pistols. One rarely encounters an early English-made flintlock double barrel shotgun such as this one that was sold in America by a well-known maker like James Haslett of Baltimore.
